Back in Print in German: A Short Story
In 1949, Ida Görres published a short story called “Die Braut des Alexius” (“The Bride of Alexius”). Good news: It was republished in 2023 in an anthology of short stories by 20th century German-speaking Catholic authors.
The story is set in the rolling hills of Lower Austria, in a fortified castle named Schloss Wildegg outside Vienna, pictured on the cover:
Ida Görres retells the story of St. Alexius. However, unlike past retellings of this story, Görres brings the reader into this saint’s vita through the eyes of his bride.
Exclusive for readers of this Substack, here is a sneak peek at the forthcoming English translation of the story:
Those who read German won’t want to miss out on the stories the editors Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz and Gudrun Trausmuth have selected with care. Multiple authors (including yours truly) provide short introductions to guide the readers into the stories. The book is Neue Schau: Große christliche Erzählungen im 20. Jahrhundert from Be+Be-Verlag in Heiligenkreuz, Austria.
